At Bertazzoni, sustainability is embedded in everything we do. Through our membership of Ecogenesys, our share of end-of-life electricals are responsibly recycled, delivering measured net carbon savings. This is an important step in our circular economy journey.

In 2024, our proportion of end-of-life electrical waste recycling resulted in an estimated net carbon saving of 135 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to 4,216 train journeys from London to Glasgow.

How we achieve carbon savings

Working with Ecogenesys allows us to transform waste into opportunity. Their independently peer-reviewed Carbon Model, certified to ISO 14044 standard, calculates the environmental benefits of recycling, ensuring transparency and alignment with global best practices.

The Ecogenesys carbon model measures the CO2e emitted for every tonne of electrical waste it recycles, using data from the transport and treatment processes. It also calculates the carbon emissions avoided through the recycling outputs.

End-of-life appliances undergo a sophisticated process at Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities (AATFs).

From safe removal of hazardous components to AI-powered optical sorting and robotic arms, these advanced processes maximise the recovery of valuable resources, deliver high quality recycling and reducing reliance on virgin materials.

Recycling large domestic appliances

Large domestic appliances such as cookers, dishwashers, and washing machines are dismantled and processed using advanced shredding and separation technologies. This enables the recovery of high-grade steel, aluminium, copper, and plastics, which are reused in new products.

By recycling these durable materials instead of extracting virgin resources, we significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable supply chain.

Recycling cooling equipment

Refrigerators and freezers require special treatment to safely remove refrigerant gases, some of which have a global warming potential thousands of times higher than CO₂.

The recycling process captures and neutralizes these substances while recovering metals and plastics for reuse. This approach prevents harmful emissions and saves up to 95% of the energy needed for virgin material production, ensuring maximum environmental benefit.
